1. Registration Certificate (RC)
What it is: Your RC is the official proof that your car is registered and that you own it. Issued by the RTO, it carries your registration number, engine number, and chassis number. When it expires: An RC for a private car is valid for 15 years from registration. After 15 years, it can be renewed for 5 years at a time. Why it matters: Driving with a lapsed RC is a serious offence — it brings heavy penalties, blocks your registration transfer, and can void insurance claims. You cannot legally sell a car whose RC is invalid.
2. Motor Insurance Policy

3. PUC Certificate (Pollution Under Control)
What it is: The PUC certificate confirms your car's emissions are within legal environmental limits. When it expires: For a brand-new car, the first PUC is valid for 1 year. After that, it typically needs renewal every 6 months (or 12 months depending on vehicle norms). Why it matters: Driving without a valid PUC invites heavy fines under the Motor Vehicles Act. 5. Driving Licence (DL)
